If I was into software development and had a proper compiler running there would be a theoretical chance to get LAME to encode 24bit AIFF ... but I'm not. Alas.
I also thought of an option to change the iTunes script to automatically convert any AIFF into a temporarily WAV in order to encode it.
If I find a SoX-version for Mac OS X ...
All in all not my idea of simplifying things.
