This sounds like a job for an iPod :)
An old EEEPC 701 is very compact, you can load up any music player that 
takes your fancy. I've used one to 'DJ' at a birthday party, although 
all the guests ended up being the DJ's, because I wasn't allowed to 
choose any beep-beep songs.

I'm not quite sure exactly what functionality you want, but any mp3 
player worth its salt will do the job, not strictly just an iPod.

Car stereo based players??
