Depends. Do you watch a lot of HD content? Then it makes absolute sense.
Do you think you'll be watching a lot of HD content over the next five
years? Then it likely makes sense.

Do you watch normal TV and DVDs? In that case, you have to see if the
price premium (which isn't that much these days) makes sense.

If you don't get full HD (1920x1080), at least get HD-ready.

The type of screen. Avoid TN at all costs. Hey, it was you who pointed
this out to me, so I probably won't have to tell you, but our 23" TV has
a TN screen and when I compare it to my 22" e-IPS screen, there's just
no comparison.

Fancy TVs these days have ethernet plugs or even wi-fi. Arguably, you
could store all your DVDs on a sizeable hard disc and play over the
network. I plan to do that, but in perhaps five years from now.

3D is supposed to be the latest thing; I just don't see it taking off,
because nobody will want to put on those daft specs when sitting in
their own living room.

Other than that, my personal preference would be to get a screen that is
just a screen, and play the sound over a set of 5.1 speakers. Knowing
you, you'd hack something together from a set of Logitech surround
speakers and an old toaster to get the ultimate DIY surround system. :)
