well "just to do gigs" is a bit of an understatement - IMHO.
These things have to be reliable and depending on what your software is doing it can be demanding.
But as you already mentioned you'll find out.

I think the technology involved in mobile devices is pretty much what can be achieved when it comes to reducing physical dimensions.
Anything smaller in a comparable compact case would be a netbook or such.

I'm currently in the process to find some sort of DIY alternative for a selfcontained box - not easy.
