For the side panel you could just do a mockup cutout on cardboard  
first (design it on inkscape or something comfortable), cut it out by  
hand, then when its ready send it off to be cut for you on a laser  
rig .. i imagine this would start with scanning the original end-piece  
first, and thats gotta be as easy as just putting it on the flatbed  
scanner and then doing a raster->vector conversion (easy in inkscape) ;)
