Thats called, simply, de-solder wick.  Yes, I screwed up - so badly  
that I forgot to video all the de-soldering/removing work.  I managed  
to put the opto-coupler where the socket for the EEPROM is supposed to  
go .. pulling that out required a bit of help from one of the RepRap  
guys and our industrial-strength heat guns ..
