Step note entry was just introduced in live 8, and they implemented it in
the worst possible way.  Its completely useless for drums, which is
primarily what you would WANT to use it for..

I seriously dont know what goes through developers heads sometimes.  They
certainly dont ever look at anyone other software when implementing a
feature, nor do they consider weather doing it their own way makes any sense
at all.
