I don't live in France. :)
But really, internet creates a legal problem in the sense that data
crosses borders between countries instantly, and what may be legal in
one country, may be illegal in another. Or it may be illegal anyway, but
not enforced in one of the countries (like Russia).
So you're left with the legal process in your own country, and the
French government can pretty well decide how it wants to tackle the
problem of illegal downloading.
Now you could argue that record companies are a bunch of cruel,
heartless, money-hungry bastards, and you'd probably be right, but that
is a moral argument and not a legal one. Moral arguments don't stand up
very well in court.
There is a need for more international agreement on how to handle this.
