Make an audio shield for Arduino, Tom.  Then you can get interesting,  
albeit low-bandwidth, results and not get mired into the nitty-gritty  
details that always seem to prevent progress on 'regular' DSP  
projects.  The Arduino sound scene is also very vibrant, friendly, and  
helpful .. plus you can sharpen a few other skills too, if you need it  
(C, Microcontroller programming, etc.)
