Its really a fact that plugin architectures have become 'standards'
when they really shouldn't have been anything more than utter, total,
hacks, thrown away the moment the OS vendor realizes that plugins in
audio are necessary, and do it at the OS level. VST was never a good
way to do this, but it stuck because people got used to using them,
and Microsoft (yes, its their fault) didn't catch up and play ball and
propose a proper OS-level means of implementing inline plugins in the
audio graph.
And when they did (with DirectX something-or-other), Steinberg decided
not to use it and continue with their own proprietary scheme in an
effort to dominate the plugin market. Plugins became a way for DAW
vendors to own their customers, and it shows.
