I suggest you start a conversation with our old friend from
Chicago, the Harvestman.  He's since moved to Seattle, and
that's enough to make me consider moving there when I return
to the US.

You guys seem to have a lot in common vis a vis repurposed
gaming electronics and hacking.  Scott saw a niche in the
modular scene for that kind of audio, and has addressed it
successfully with his Harvestman line of modules:

He had zero microcontroller/PIC programming experience when
he started, so you may well have a leg up on him.
