The Ableton racks are great and there are a couple of nice ones
available on the forum along with some tricks and tips.
THE Rack List. (What can YOU do with Racks in Live 6?) -

The Little List of Tips and Tricks -

I have visited the covert operators site on occasion so I guess I should
spend more time over there. I think it is run by a former music-bar
member, Andreas Wetterberg.

That's very alright, I'm not considering at all I'm an expert on the
topic -
I'm always a much better theorical rambler than I'm good at applying
them. I
feel like there should also be more of this type of talk in the 'bar. We
don't share enough tricxs.
The good thing about the rack is the ability to combine effect while
having
a set of controls that modifies parameters across the various plugs in
the
rack. Try using a simple delay + filter on a simple rythm to get a feel
of
what's possible. Also use the 'utility' to cover the gain loss when
morphing
the parameters.
There's a very good ableton related blog here:
http://www.covops.org/index.php/The-CovOps-Blog/
And this one in particular shows the effect rack combined with
automation
through what they call 'dummy clips', which is just automation loops:
http://www.covops.org/index.php/The-CovOps-Blog/Dummy-Clips-Revisited.ht
ml
and this one ain't bad either for dub delays
http://www.covops.org/index.php/The-CovOps-Blog/How-to-Dub-delays-in-Liv
e...
-in-HD.html
the use of videos makes it super instructive. I wonder which screen
caster
they used, coz it's really effective.

I understand that the use of the fx should be transparent when using it
for texture and position and I do try to do that.
My DAW of choice is Ableton and I am familiar(ish) with the effects rack
but I guess I don't know enough about effects to get as much out of them
as I could. I guess a bit more research and experimenting with the
effects and what each parameter does is required on my part.
Sorry if this is basic stuff but I don't have anybody to bounce this
stuff off to get feedback or to just have general chats. I rely on you
guys to point me in the right direction a lot of the time. :)
Cheers!

I guess my POV is that you should use FX so that they don't sound like
'I've
added FX'. Either because they are used to produce the sound's texture
or
because they position spacially the sound in a subtle enough way that it
doesn't feel like it's there.
At the total opposite end of the spectrum (and I'd really would love to
dig
that one more) is people like stephan bodzin who switches effects
(especially delays) in "radical" ways on some section of the song to
make it
go totally elsewere rythmically.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9_L1rPuORY&feature=related for example.
Wierdly enough it's kind of radical and minimal at the same point.
Quality
on youtube is crap. His album is highly recommended.
I don't know if you are intersted in outboard or DAW based research but
I'm
very interested in the possibility of ableton's effect rack and it's
automation through MIDI (faderfoxes in my case, bodzin's got a lemur).

Hey Marc,
I guess my request was a bit vague so I will try to explain as best I
can
what exactly I am looking for. I guess I am looking to get better use
out
of the numerous effects that I have at my disposal. At the moment I use
effects to position a sound in a mix or to change how something sounds
or
simple delays etc. I am looking to use these effects beyond what I
currently use them for so I am thinking there must be something to say
if
you change this particular parameter you will get his type of effect.
I am not finding it easy to explain this so I hope you got something
from
what I just said. J
Regards,
Declan.

Hey all,
I am wondering if anybody has any FX tips or a link to an online
resource?
I have very little knowledge on how to get any decent FX in my music so
anything would be appreciated.
Cheers!
Declan.
