In Norfolk there's a town called "Happisburgh" but it's pronounced
"Hayzboruh",  also there's "Stiffkey" pronounce "Stookey".

It's just a mechanism to sort out the locals from the tourists ;)

Like telling posh people from poor - the surname "Featherstonehaugh" is
pronounced "Fanshaw".
