I didn't like the comments posted below about parallel ports (and even 
serial ports) being a waste of space and obsolete. I still use the 
parallel port for programming micros, a midi interface and a few other 
diy bits and bobs.

Fair enough there are general USB solutions now and even USB to 
serial/parallel adaptors, but that's just some more dingle-dangle shit 
hanging off the back ;)
