I can't answer your question, but if you're looking for ways
to incorporate these into your non-musical workflow, you
might start with a Griffin Powermate

Maybe even multiple ones, placed in a small wooden cradle?

My Kensington trackball has a rotating collar that can be
mapped to various functions, four or five buttons, and so
on.

It's not pretty or integrated, but it's a step in that
direction.
