Run Console.app.  Open a window for every log file in your system  
(console.log, system.log, messages.log, ppp.log, etc.)  Turn on  
debug.log - Apple turn it off by default, so you will need to add an  
entry to /etc/syslog.conf that looks like this:

*.debug                         /var/log/debug.log

Then restart.  Make sure you watch debug.log too.


*LEAVE CONSOLE.APP RUNNING ALWAYS*  When you want to find out whats  
going on in a session, clear all the log windows, minimize console,  
and then run your session.  When something bad happens, go check the  
log files.

You'll be amazed - simply amazed - at what you find in the log files  
that tells you what is happening with your system.
