audio distortions after recording

Urrrgh... Yeah, that indeed sounds like some kind of buffer problem.

Two tracks should not be a performance problem - so adding more RAM or a 
faster disk probably won't make a massive difference.

A few things to check: Did the machine go into some sort of power safe 
mode? You said the problem only occurred halfway through the recording, 
so that could be the problem. I'd also check the latency settings. 
Low-latency is clearly not required for this kind of recording, so I'd 
choose a conservative value. Updated drivers might help, though.
