The button state is stored as a big fat 32-bit bitfield .. so you can  
watch the state and see changes easily enough ..

Definitely all of the above can be done.  You don't have to trigger  
notes with the buttons - do whatever you want with them.  I'm part-way  
through a hackup that will play back different wavetables for each  
key ..
