and yes, you have to pay import duties and taxes if you import things  
yourself on a plane. Most of the time if you keep a straight face, you  
won't be asked if you want to declare anything. Keep in mind though  
that if you get caught smuggling something like a $3500 MPC 5000, and  
you'd have to pay about 450 EUR (19% VAT)  they won't think it  
negligible, you might even get a criminal investigation for attempted  
tax evasion...

If you order individual books or CDs or DVDs (in Germany I think it's  
for stuff less than 20EUR, you won't have to pay taxes or duties.
