I had hoped that the SSD would be standard, which would have
tipped the scales IMHO {actually, no, not with so few
peripherals, and especially no Firewire}, but that option
puts the notebook in 3000+ territory.

Well, like y'all say, SSD will only get cheaper, faster,
better.
