Can you *realiably* stack several Presonus boxes and make sure they're
perfectly synchronised (word clock)?

Assuming that this works at least to some extent: Can you freely route
inputs and outputs across interface barriers with zero latency?

The closest I can see from Presonus is the Lightpipe with 32 channels of
ADAT. After adding the converter boxes, it surely is more expensive than
a 24i/o system. It also doesn't interface with Paul's existing kit
(using TDIF).

With my MOTU system in its current configuration, I can reliably stream
and mix 52 channels of digital audio plus 16 analog channels in and out.
Maxed out, the system would allow 96 channels in and out. I haven't seen
any other system that does the same with a mix of interface that's even
close in flexibility unless you look at the high-end with ProTools and
the like (and prices to match).

There are a lot of excellent Firewire interfaces around. I'm not
discounting them in any way. I just find that the MOTU stuff fills the
niche when the requirements start exceeding typical Firewire interface
capabilities without entering ProTools or Soundscape territory. Paul's
requirement of 24+ channels sounds a lot like that.
