Sorry to give a very non sexy reply but: sometimes it works just to draw
your room to scale then cut out some little scale representations of your
furniture/gear.  Then just move them around to taste, getting an idea of
where things could go.

PS: I used to be a draughtsman/designer.  Fun days..
