I think this is a question of arrangement. widening up the vocal puts  
it in the background, something that (usually) works best for backups  
in the chorus.

With those it can make more sense to rerecord the same lines (or add  
harmonies), even with the same singer, then pan those left and right  
(in different amounts, not necessarily hard left/right). With most  
singers you'd want to straighten out the pitch a bit (track by track).

That should give you much more depth and life in there than using a  
stereospread plugin...
