Maximum ram in windows?

Does anybody know what is the maximum amount of ram that is accessible
by Windows XP and Vista?  I'm having difficulty getting a clear answer
from my browsing the many websites that I am led to believe hold the
answer.

 

I have 4GB on my motherboard and both windows installations only
recognise 3GB.
