the only ears that should be golden to you are your own. If I get it  
right, it's convolution, right? for 89 bucks, just get it! Convolution  
certainly is better than most verbs.

the rule of thumb is: if you can turn up the reverb to a level where  
you actually hear reverberation and it still sounds good to you (not  
like some cheap simulated room, but like something that could be a  
warehouse, club, studio, whatever, then the reverb is of decent quality.

check out Logic's "Space Designer" for a very good "included" reverb  
and compare it with others...
