In my experience so far, MacBook Pros have been really shitty, and the options for repairing/replacing broken parts are shittier, still. This definitely fills me with some dread. I’m not so sure I’ve had a Mac of any stripe remain reliable for more than a year or two since pre-Intel days.

On Tue, Nov 17, 2020 at 9:00 PM Tony Scharf <tony.scharf@outlook.com> wrote:

There is a lot I like about the new M1 chips…and a lot that makes me nervous. It seems their goal is to make it impossible to run anything BUT Apple Silicon. No upgrades allowed. It’s either buy a new machine, or deal with the old one. They may mean to make laptops as disposable as iPhones…
In any case, I’m taking a wait and see. My 2015 iMac is still pretty ok….starting to get a little full, and some newer plugins cause some choking…but it still works.
Im more worried about my MOTU audio and MIDI hardware. It may finally be time to upgrade that.
Will be interesting to see what audio stuff will be run on those (e.g. instrument separation?). It also doesn’t bode well for DSP-hardware boards, they are now obviously just electricity wasting dongles.
And also never backed up all those downloadaed plugins (double yaarrrgghh), so that’ll be a fun challenge to get some of them playing again…
