Good point about USB power supply. I think I tried them on a powered hub at the time and the problems were extremely deterministic, so I doubt that was the root cause for the MIDI interfaces. It also occasionally choked on streams of MIDI clock messages with the Cirklon that has its own power supply, so I rather expect a timing / buffering issue. 

It could well have been the issue on the external SSD. With USB-C, this is obviously no longer a problem. In any case, it works now, so I can't be bothered... I do like the mioXL approach, though it mentions a limit of 22 ports somewhere, so I would take a closer look first.

The problem was more than likely the external devices not getting the power it needed until you put it on a hub ..
