Gert's passing and Group Hug

I've been traveling the past month and just returned home to where I can
access reliable internet. I never met Gert in person, in fact I don't
think I've met anyone on the bar in person. It was with deep sadness
that I read the news and we are all worse off for having lost such a
gentle spirit among us on the list and our current terrestrial home. My
thoughts are first with his family during what must be a incredibly
difficult time. I am truly sorry for their loss.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the perils of the internet but
also the amazing connections and community that form as well. I have not
been active much the past couple years but I do read and follow
everything posted here and via facebook from individuals.

I think the important thing here is that none of us has the time we may
want and often we are surprised when the news comes. This unfortunately
means we are left thinking of what we never said, or did. As I have
inevitably gotten older the nature of time means these shocks come more
frequently and most sadly become routine. In light of this, I've been
thinking a lot about Gert in particular and the Bar in general. I just
want to say, before anyone else slips away, you all are very important
to me and I have tremendous respect for this group - Each of you as
individuals, us as a group, the discussions, and even the arguments. I
cherish all of these things and I intend to be more active going forward
and not just read from the sidelines. Thanks to all of you for being
here for me and all of us.
