The recording of a gig this year that Gert and I did in rural Gelderland together with the
old band. Formally known as De Rest, Modern Management, Fourth Decade and VierManSterk.

Later it went on as De Hufters, without Gert and without Wout den Braber.

Edwin Steenstra did lead guitar for De Hufters and Jan-Willen Vermeulen did the drums. I am very happy
to play again with the old formation and think that both for me and Gert it holds that our guitarplay has
become more to the point.

So we decided to continue as VMSdeHufters.

Hi all

 

I know a few of you already have the NI Kontrol keyboards so Im a bit late
to the party getting one for my birthday.

 

Anyway, if anyone was not going to like them, it was going to be me (Im a
fussy bugger).  However, its super impressive..!!

 

I got stung with Kore but the integration on the S61 is great.  Ive read and
had lots of kit over the years that says "you wont use the keyboard and
mouse as much" only to be disappointed.  But the Kontrol keyboards do work
really well with Complete Kontrol and any software it supports (or
non-supported stuff that you have mapped).

 

The light show is really useful, especially for drums.

 

Loads of fun just going through the 1,000s of patches and hitting
"favourite" when you get something you like (all from the S61).

 

Really liking it..

I'm with Tony here. Unless I can do apt-get, yum or pkginstall *and it 
actually works* I'm not interested.

I've tried building packages on a Solaris system. Gave up because of all 
the Linux folks that are unaware that there are other compilers than gcc.

Well those are all valid psychological justifications for not trying new technology, I grant you that, but Reaper is an awesome tool, great value for money, and it showing up on Linux is going to be wonderful for those of us who aren’t obsessive-compulsive about being mainstream, and just want good tools for the investment.

But I should know better than to try to enlighten you on Linux-related issues, you’ve got a very fixed mindset and don’t even make music anyway.

Just built it and running it on my DAW.  Looks very good, still has some bugs though, crashed hard on me twice in 10 minutes .. so no, its not ready for production, but seems like Justin is really pushing native-on-Linux further, which is a good thing.  Until it stabilizes, will just keep using good ol’ OpenSource Ardour, as it is simply great as well..

Oh.. also cool, raspberryPi builds are on the way.  So you can build a world-class DAW system for about $100:

.. and just so its clear, this was as simple as downloading the archive files, unzipping them, putting libSwell in the same directory as Reaper, and running Reaper.  The previous instructions you all made fun of were for those of us who can handle software development.  If you just want to give it a try, and know how to unzip things, its as easy as doing that twice.

Sorry, I didn't mean to lay bait. And let it be known that I think Linux is a fucking great idea, I'm very happy that it exists and am much to bequemlich to actually use it (yet), but like to keep up with its development. 

Reaper coming to Linux is another great step towards a critical mass in essential apps. 

I was making fun of the nerdy install instructions thinking that we are on a similar level, liking Linux but not really using it full time...

I wish I had more time to tinker: Linux and pure data on a raspberry -- really cool system...!

Linux is great for running services. As soon as I try it for desktop 
use, be on on my CCTV server or running SteamOS, I feel it falls short 
of what Windows offers me out of the box.

Like Tony, I spend the entire day behind a screen, so in the evening, I 
just want to relax and not be forced to think about computers. It 
doesn't help that I don't manage to sleep more than six hours a day and 
that I'm always tired.

It does take a bit of patience to set up.  What helped me out a great deal, was doing the video tutorials:

The festival wrapped up today and it was a crazy, diverse, and enlightening few days. I didn't know what to expect and haven't fully processed what I experienced but over all it was an adventure. What stands out the most was how different every event was, different ideologies, different sounds and different people - but everyone felt connected as one group. Stand outs for me were getting to hear Suzanne Ciani perform and talk and Laurie Anderson. Oh and as some of you may know I also bought a Model D reissue, whoops...

I'm about to meet up with the organizers so maybe I'll find out a bit of what's in store for next year, previously it was biennial but I guess not anymore.

Met a trumpet player. Used an ordinary Behringer (mono). Ronny
Schenk is a bit nervous in the beginning. Later on you can hear
where it is going to.

Yea I really don't think there is another one like it, in terms of being a nerd conference but still having big name musical acts to pull in the gen pop.

Also, I just want to keep eating biscuits in North Carolina.

I know the Internet is abound with love and hate on the reissue. But I just have to say as someone who loves synthesizers if you have never played a model d or one of the Moog modulars you really owe it to yourself to try it. 

It really was a wow moment. It was like all the concepts of synthesis that I've learned just came around full circle for me. Like, oh THIS is what it's supposed to sound like. Not that other synthesizers are less worthy, not at all, but for instance the way the oscillator waves bounce off each other when detuned, the fucking filter, I've never heard anything like this in person, it just checks the boxes for me on an emotional level. I felt it in my sub37 but this went beyond. 

Will some of that technical audio magic get lost in a mix? sure. But for me the inspiration you get interacting with the instrument in making the performance that is being recorded, helps make the performance what it is. At least personally I know I wouldn't get that same inspiration from a plugin and a controller. 

So that's why I bought #10. 

I had my friend (who actually got me into making music but doesn't make stuff anymore) try the model 15 after he was playing with the minilogue, jdxi etc... His reaction was "how come this sounds so big and those sound so small?..." :)

Simple.  The Moogs natively squash the crap out of everything.  Put the
Minilogue through a DBX 266xl with compression set to max and a low
threshold and you will get a similar sound.  

It's a very nice sound and easy to achieve, not sure why more of the
analog manufacturers don't throw a compressor on their outputs.  Doing
that instantly makes the Minilogue a 100 times more fat sounding.

Totally, in fact having analog compression and overdrive on the analog Rytm is part of what makes it great. But I still think a good amount is the way the total package of the Moog is working together. Bigger and fatter are relative terms, there's amplification etc..., but also how the components are reacting together to create harmonics and movement, there is a literal weight there that can't be ignored. Like I tried the full Roland/Malekko system 500 right before and I really don't think it would sound the same no matter what you put it through. 

And again I'm talking about these reissues, I'm hearing stuff that is not in Moog's newer designs.

Yea but part of it is they wanted to keep it as original as possible. So it's giant and wood, they had to get a company to re-make specific transistors, the boards are the same (through hole) (they even left empty spaces on the board to control the old analog keyboard) so not saving money with more modern tech etc... But yes it is a luxury purchase.

Yes but no one really knows what the deal is. They told me after the initial 30 run they are doing a run for retailers and then there will be a spread of time before the next. Retailers seem to be giving the impression it will be a reg production run. 

My guess Moog is seeing what demand is going to be. I have a feeling they will keep it limited in some way like the modulars. There is no artist discount on these either, though they gave one to Gary Numan.

Oh and one other thing that I always find weird is when you see fairly normal people in real life that you have only seen on the internet. The sound production is very, very good, and sounds remarkably close to 
the original.

As for the vocals: what the fuck is that about? :)

I'm very happy with it, but my wife isn't, and she has absolutely no 
problems telling me in no uncertain terms what she thinks of it.

Having said that, at age 46, there's no way I can reach the highs of 
Midge Ure. Singing "Chandelier" an octave lower is difficult enough, as 
is "Born to die" in the same key.

On first listen .. it is really well done, I think the tracking is superb - and I have sort of come to expect that of you, though, the instrumentation is quite tight .. the mix seems, to my ears, pretty digital but in a good way .. the vocal effects are fun and stark like they should be, I really like the chorus/reverb on the vocals at times - I can’t help feel that you’re holding back on the vocals and should really put in 0.15% more soul to push it right over the edge, but then again what do I know .. great track indeed!  Thanks for sharing the World Exclusive Premiere with us here on the music-bar ..

Thanks :-) I’m going to re-sing it with slightly different lyrics, so I might try to add some % while I’m doing it, but I’m not really an “emotional singer”, youknowwhatahmsayin…the effects on the vocals are also there for a reason :-)

Gearwise, drums/effects are modular, oboe-ish line is the ARP Odyssey, the violin is a *gasp* violin (took me 4 hours to record), the rest is Arturia + piano samples. If I have the time’ I’ll swap the soft bass synths for “real” ones. My studio has been partly relocated to the living room for a couple of weeks, but tomorrow I get to reassemble. The song needs to be done either by friday or monday, so I’ll probably get everything done in time.

Oh, nothing much. Means nothing to me :-)

Actually, it’s for work. We just won a public tender which took us more than a year of work, and the song summarizes the stages in the process. And in the end, we are Victorious. Contracts will be signed on friday, and then I’ll unleash the song on my unsuspecting colleagues. Or on monday.

Wives just don’t get it :-) On the other hand, I do feel for anyone witnessing my voice breaking when I try to sing either loud or high. Trying both the same time is cringeworthy.
