Hey Jay,  thanks for you elaborate answer!
I'm afraid you're right, no fink, no ports.
I had fink on my old PowerBook some years ago and was quite happy with it, IIRC.
Wouldn't it be a mess if I installed fink right now, after I already succesfully compiled some other tools?
ffmpeg is the first one causing trouble.
I got XCode 3.2.5 on my machine.
