As it turns out, for some reason my son wants a DSLR for xMas, so he 
picked a Canon 500D pretty much on his own.
I agreed it was a pretty good choice.
There may be a way for the CHDK guys to improve the firmware in some 
ways in future for this camera (the hardware is  pretty much the same as 
the 550D, except for the sensor resolution) but that's not too important 
and more a possible bonus.
