On the other hand, because developing custom chips isn't exactly cheap, 
even with  FPLAs or whatever they're called these days, using standard 
components means you can focus on the actual synthesis engine, instead 
of all the other stuff. If a 'real' synthesiser 'must' have custom 
chips, only the big manufacturers would be able to make them. And 
despite a couple of products that accidentally escaped the research lab, 
those usually play for safe.

Having said that, the innards of the Neuron don't look particularly 
impressive.
