I also think that some bands, particularly New Order, already had an 
understanding of machinery in music, and made this part of music decades ago, 
and Metheny is stepping in their shoes, to some extent.

If you watch videos of New Order playing live (esp the "live in the studio" 
stuff), you can see a casual, almost laissez-faire attitude, that really 
liberates the music. Particularly Stephen Morris, who moves from drums to keys 
back and forth, completely comfortable, and listening to the machine-music, and 
being equal to it, rather than trying to dominate it.
