I needed to get a low impedance out from a "guitar" a while back, and ended up
using an AD8642 op-amp, primarily because I wanted to avoid distortion.

Definitely worth building a few FET circuits to get the feel of the things. Very
low power. The distortion is tasteful, subtle and appropriate, for guitar/bass.
