Not my dream unless you include some tactile feedback.  Perhaps some processor controlled ferro-fluid?

Even the old Rhodes Chroma knew about this by including a little solenoid that thumped the case every time you press one if its membrane (tactile feedbackless) buttons.

A multitouch tablet feels like a smooth sheet of glass or plastic and hence reduces the number of senses stimulated by one.  You don't get this with a knob, push switch or fader or music keyboard.
