It's invaluable getting this input.

There's not much of human interaction in the course I'm attending since 
it's net based. It's just me and my books :)

My first sketch involves an item class with childrenclasses for 
different types (Book, CD, Journal). Then follows an db class which 
stores items, saves and loads the vector holding the items, searches for 
items etc. The next step would be the UI's which would use the 
operations in the db class to view and change items.

I'll try to analyze how this would agree with your suggestions.
