Expanders (was Mixing Course)

So, Expanders kick butt.. (I said exciter in my previous mail) The course
demo'd lots of uses but here is a simple one.

You have a drum loop that has lots of reverb. To attenuate the reverb, use
an expander to pull the drum hits out of the mixed signal, level the reverb
floor untouched.

Also good for putting dynamics back into something that has been over
compressed.

I think my main use will be to pull up vocals to a more constant level
before maybe compressing a little. If I compressed to bring up the quiet
bits, I would also be bringing up the noise floor.

I have not tried any of this myself yet but watching it demo'd was might
sexy.. The reverb drum example was incredible. Not only were dynamics put
back in with some control over transients, but it was also like someone
turned the reverb off! Like magic!
