All,

 FWIW, I figured it out.
Right click on the 'settings' at the top of the strip and select 'create
select'. The strip then appears in the arrange window.

 Recording and mixing is nearly done for one of the tracks, anyone fancy
having a go at mastering it? It's rock music, not synth stuff :-)
