It's getting stranger:

At this very moment a backup started saving 9.2 GB!
Although it just did a backup!
I'm pretty sure that I didn't touch that amount of data since this
early morning I went to bed!

But it's even better - see this log entries:

Mar 1 10:58:09 boskop-2 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[8042]:
Copied 11835 files (14.0 MB) from volume Macintosh HD.
Mar 1 10:58:32 boskop-2 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[8042]:
No pre-backup thinning needed: 11.34 GB requested (including padding),
104.05 GB available
Mar 1 11:19:13 boskop-2 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[8042]:
Copied 63148 files (9.2 GB) from volume Macintosh HD.
Mar 1 11:19:20 boskop-2 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[8042]:
Starting post-backup thinning
Mar 1 11:19:20 boskop-2 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[8042]:
No post-back up thinning needed: no expired backups exist
Mar 1 11:19:20 boskop-2 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[8042]:
Backup completed successfully.

I didn't do anything which justifies a backup volume of 9.2 GB ... not
at all. WTF?

I'm desperately looking for a logfile which tells me what's going on,
besides that thin information in system.log.

Any hints? Jay?

   cheers, Michael.
