I don't think that the synths being marketed today are worth the  
money being asked for them, all things considered.  The profit  
margins are astronomical for some mfr's.  Since a $1200 synth means  
far more profit, even if less are sold, the incentive to design a  
$200 - $500 synth is not there, even though more would be sold.  Its  
really truly an elitist strategy, and I think that bleeds over into  
the kinds of music that are being made with the products.
